The first 48 hours after storm damage
- Stay out of rooms with sagging ceilings and away from standing water near outlets or appliances
- Photograph and video everything before anything is moved, tarped, or thrown away
- Get the roof tarped and openings boarded fast - stopping new water matters more than starting repairs
- Move undamaged belongings out of wet rooms; wet contents left in place become damaged contents
- Call your insurer to open the claim, and keep receipts for every emergency expense
Why fast tarping is not optional
Insurance policies require homeowners to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage after a loss; adjusters call it mitigating the damage. A storm-opened roof that sits exposed through the next rain turns one claim into two arguments. Professional tarping is cheap relative to what it prevents, it is typically reimbursable under the claim, and it buys time for the roof and interior scope to be assessed properly instead of in a panic.
