The install order that protects each finish
A kitchen refresh with cabinets, counters, and floors succeeds or fails on sequence. Cabinets set first, level and shimmed, because everything references them. Counters are templated off the installed cabinets, then fabricated and set. Flooring placement depends on the design: under the cabinets when the floor is continuous and the appliances need to slide out over it, or up to the kick after, when materials and budgets dictate. Backsplash and trim come last, bridging counter to wall. Rearranging that order to chase speed is how gaps, lippage, and trapped appliances happen.
Countertops: what to expect between template and install
- Templating happens after cabinets are set; the measurements are of your actual kitchen, not the drawing
- Fabrication of stone or quartz typically takes one to two weeks after template
- Seams are planned, not improvised; ask where they will fall before fabrication
- Sinks and faucets must be on site at template time, since the cutouts are made to them
