I'm Josh Darlin with True. We're here at the Martin residence and [music] one of my favorite things about this project was that they are dear friends of ours. So when he called and he said, "I got a flood coming in from [music] the rain. I came out and did an assessment of the house. We got our mitigation team out here right away and we were [music] able to get equipment in there, cut out the wet drywall, cut out the wet insulation and get the master bathroom [music] and the closet area dried out so that there wasn't any mold or further damage. We were [music] able to do a better assessment after the storm and find out that the tile roof had been damaged [music] from the storm. A lot of those damages led to that roof completely needing to be replaced. In this case, [music and singing] it was the area right above their master closet and then the area on the back side of the roof that also affected [music] the damaging the ceiling in the kitchen and the dining room area. The interior damage is completely repaired and as you [music] can see, it's beautiful. This roof will last for years [singing] and even decades. >> [music]

Storm Water Inside, a Damaged Tile Roof Above: One Claim, One Crew
Josh Darland tells this one personally, because the Martin family are dear friends: the call came in during the rain with a flood coming into the house. He came out, assessed, and had the mitigation team on site right away, pulling wet drywall and insulation out of the master bathroom and closet so mold and further damage never got a foothold.
After the storm passed, a proper assessment found the real culprit: the tile roof had taken storm damage over the master closet and on the back side, feeding the ceiling damage in the kitchen and dining room. The damage led to a full roof replacement, the interior was completely repaired, and, as Josh says on the walkthrough, it is beautiful, and this roof will last for decades.
An interior leak after a storm means the roof gets inspected, period
Water on the ceiling is a symptom; the storm-damaged roof is the disease. Patching drywall without a roof assessment guarantees a repeat, and it can complicate the insurance claim, because the interior damage and the roof damage are one event and should be documented as one. The right order is the one in this video: stop the active water, dry the interior, then assess the roof thoroughly before finalizing any scope. A crew that handles both sides can connect the evidence; two unconnected contractors often each miss half.
Tile roofs and storms: what damage looks like
- Cracked, slipped, or missing tiles let water reach the underlayment, which is the actual waterproof layer
- Underlayment has a lifespan; an older membrane under intact-looking tile can still be the failure point
- Damage concentrates at hips, ridges, valleys, and penetrations, where wind gets leverage
- After any named storm, a documented roof inspection creates the record a future claim will need
